FRIENDLY TYPEWRITER
DESIGN PROBLEM
In a world of free, preset fonts, the same typography is often used to provoke the same feeling in customers and consumers. American typewriter is a slab serif typeface created by Joel Kaden and Tony Stan in 1974. Its proportional design makes it very pleasing and easy to read. I am drawn to it, even though it is not often used today. I sought to create a completely unique display font, inspired from American Typewriter Typeface, with a more inviting, playful feel and a modern punch.
DESIGN PROCESS
Handgloves is a word that is often used in the creation of a typeface; it contains one of each family of letters and gives type designers a good sense of an overall typeface. Throughout the extensive ideation process of creating my own typeface, I developed a connection to the word, and it earned a place as the title of my process book. The creation process involved maintaining proportions among familiar letters and creating consistency throughout the entire upper- and lower-case alphabets. My typeface is a new take on a classic that attempts to maintain its old-fashioned and industrial roots.
