THE PROJECT
Happy Quail Farms is small urban farm that has been growing specialty peppers for over 40 years. I grew up on the farm and certainly know how to sell a pepper. When started to work as a designer, Happy Quail Farms offered me a new way to practice my marketing chops - I now manage the website, social media, email marketing, and all creative assets associated with the brand. When I feel like experimenting with something fun, I often spice up the Happy Quail brand, resulting in colorful packaging, sweatshirts, and tote bags to offer to our customers.
DESIGN PROBLEM
Amongst Happy Quail Farms’ most popular products are our pepper sauces. Our assorted flavors make great presents for the gourmands in your life during the holiday season. I created festive gift wrap boxes to highlight our four main pepper sauces—Habanero, Cayenne, Ají, & Smoky Cayenne.
DESIGN PROCESS
Each of our four signature sauces has a very distinctive flavor and the packaging reflects this. Habanero, the hottest of all the sauces, is VERY spicy. This is illustrated with bombs and the bright yellow color – a warning but also eye-catching for hot-heads!
Cayenne is a sweet, savory and traditional hot sauce, appealing to everyone who likes a bit of a kick. It’s as multi-purposeful as ketchup and the white box is therefore an inviting and attractive color to the customer who wants something spicy, but not painfully so.
Smoky Cayenne is quite possibly the most flavorful and popular sauce offered by Happy Quail Farms. Although it has the same base as the Cayenne (and hence a similar pepper motif) the Smoky Cayenne also includes dried and smoked peppers which give it a rich smoky taste. The black color evokes the bold ingredients within.
Ají, the mildest of all the sauces, is made with a variety of sweet Habaneros. These peppers hail from an island off the coast of Venezuela. They have a delicious fruity flavor and are traditionally paired with fish. The box for this sauce reflects a light, refreshing taste with tropical island origins.
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
On the bottom of every box is a return address. This way customers can send back their empty jars to be refilled, helping Happy Quail Farms create less waste and gain lasting customers.
